A level plan for everyone?

The Level is a well-used, much-loved space, popular with local people and community groups. Discussions about how to improve it have gone on for many years. In particular, the skate-park and playground areas have become a little run-down, and need investment and improvement.

Brighton and Hove Council is preparing a bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund that would enable it to undertake large-scale improvements to this public space, including refurbishing the southern end in line with its original historical design.

However, a proposal to build a new skate-park at the northern end of the Level is causing concern. There is local opposition to the idea, the feeling being that this northern end should stay green, and available for general use by families, and groups of all ages.

Many people feel that the skate-park should be refurbished, but remain at the southern end. This would still be good news for the skate-boarders, who are happy for it to remain where it is as long as it is no smaller than the existing facility, and incorporates a much improved, modern design.

Members of the Triangle, Friends of the Level, and other local groups have been discussing these issues, and have formed the ‘Keep The Level Green’ campaign group, which has drawn up a petition to oppose developing the northern end.
