Graham’s Gigs: Live music in our neck of the woods

Tommy Reilly, 7 June ’09, Freebutt, 1 Phoenix Place

The autumn TV schedule will bring talent contests like X Factor, Come Dancing and the lesser-known Orange Unsigned Act (T4 on Channel 4). Like X Factor, the early entries on Orange are as talent-less and deluded as they are exploited and patronised by the TV producers. The more accomplished surface whilst others are eliminated in tears, their narcissistic dreams shattered with those long silences whilst the envelope is opened.

Tommy Reilly was an early entry, initially dismissed − but wait! ‘Maybe we were wrong,’ say the judges, ‘bring him back.’ He is the archetypal underdog; with his deadpan humour and charm combined with unprepossessing looks you root for him to win − and he does. Despite the TV hullabaloo and media hype, five months have passed since he won the prize of ‘being signed’, and now he’s on tour. The Freebutt plays host to an odd audience tonight; not the usual twenty-something Brighton ‘musos’, but a teenage-girl following. That’s the power of telly, eh!

He is clearly talented as he plays guitar and piano with his lovelorn lyrics, and has some − but few − cracking songs. He’s acquired a tight band who broaden out his lone singer-songwriter appeal, but this can’t disguise that his strong Glaswegian accent sometimes grates, and his songs are at times one-dimensional.

It’s a tough old world is the music business; it seems you win a national competition riding a wave of publicity, then end up hardly filling the Freebutt. Despite his limitations, he deserves better.
