Let us keep you informed
Triangle Local History GroupNext meeting Monday 1st March 2010 in The Bugle Pub (staged area) from 7.30pm The Triangle History Group meets every month to talk informally about the history of our unique area of Brighton. Some of us research our houses using the archives, maps and street directories in the Brighton Local History Library or bring along copies of old photographs we have found of our streets when they were first built. Others have lived in the area all their life and just like to meet up to discuss events that happened in the recent past in our community. Any resident is welcome to join us. Phone 677141 for further information Heritage Open Days & Local History GroupThe Triangle’s Local History Group took part for the first time in Heritage Open Days – a national event concentrated over the weekend of 12-13 September, for which Brighton was the 2009 host city. www.heritageopendays.org Lewes Road Triangle Exhibition A free exhibition of historic photographs, maps, paintings and engravings showing the development of Park Crescent and the Lewes Road Triangle area from the 1860s to the 1970s was held at The Bugle Pub, from 10-13 September. Research Your Street We plan to find out more about the original residents of the houses in our streets, and the jobs they undertook. We’ll have leaflets explaining how to research your own home or street in the Triangle (including free expert-led study sessions at the Brighton History Centre). Once you get started the possibilities are endless, and it takes four people less than a week to research a whole street from the mid-19th century to the 1970s! For information about Brighton & Hove Open Door events WHO LIVED IN YOUR HOUSE? The Triangle Group have been offered help to research the history of the houses in a street in their area by Brighton & Hove Open Door for possible inclusion in next year’s Heritage Open Days. Which street shall we choose? Contact us with your suggestion or leave a message on 677141 and if you are interested in learning more about your house or street come to one of our regular meetings. We are serializing on-line the written memories of former residents which give us special insight into growing up in the Triangle streets from the 1950s to the 1970’s. Our thanks to Hugh Hazelton and Sue and Charlie Knight who have been so generous in sharing their childhood reminiscences with us by letter. See attachments at the bottom of the page. PLANS: A Guided Tour of the Triangle as part of the Brighton Festival Fringe Events next May. We need residents to volunteer to escort members of the public to places of historical interest in their street. The History Group will co-ordinate it and provide you with information.
